The present government has indicated that it is open to blanket pardons for cannabis-possession offences in the future, but the people who have already been harmed by prohibition will continue to suffer until amnesty legislation is passed. Righting this historical wrong should not merely be an afterthought.

Criminalization relating to simple cannabis possession has had devastating consequences for Canadians. In addition to restricting travel to the United States and preventing participation in communities through volunteering and meaningful employment, the enforcement of cannabis-related offences has disproportionately targeted racialized and marginalized Canadians – the most vulnerable members of our society.

No Canadian should be burdened with a criminal record for a minor, non-harmful act that will no longer be a crime. A poll conducted in May 2017 by Nanos Research and the Globe and Mail indicated that 62% of Canadians either support or somewhat support pardons for people with criminal records for marijuana possession.

We are asking our government to act now and issue blanket pardons to all individuals for the offence of simple possession of cannabis.

Campaign for Cannabis Amnesty Petition

We, the undersigned residents of Canada draw the attention of the House to the following:

THAT:

Criminal convictions relating to simple cannabis possession have devastating consequences for Canadians. They restrict Canadians from travelling to the United States, reduce access to housing and prevent participation in communities through volunteering and meaningful employment. Moreover, the discriminatory way in which cannabis offences have been historically policed means that the enforcement of cannabis-related offences has disproportionately targeted racialized and marginalized Canadians – the most vulnerable members of our society.

No Canadian should be burdened with a criminal record for a minor, non-harmful act that will no longer be a crime.

THEREFORE:

We call upon Parliament to immediately enact legislation that grants pardons to all individuals for the offence of simple possession of cannabis.
